Poetry X Development Log
Polychromatism
28 September 2003
More hours of work on small details today...
In my efforts to bring the site up to reasonably complete, at least in appearances, I worked on the main site home page today, finishing the sidebar (at least for the features currently implemented).
I always spend too long in Photoshop making graphics, starting off with something really complex and interesting looking, deciding after seeing them on the page that they're too interesting looking and distract from the content, and then going back and simplifying them and cranking out a whole set of images in a half an hour.
Today I wanked around with the "Recently Added" sub-headers - Poets, Articles, Forum Discussion Threads, etc. I think the results bring a bit of colour to what would otherwise be a pretty dull list of things that are new around the site.
I tend to match colours up monochromatically - for instance, the current default theme (as of the end of September 2003) is made up of shades of pastel blues - soft colours that are soothing and easy on the eyes.
However, a little splash of mid-tone red really spices things up - it's in the "X" graphic that many browsers will show next to the URL or else if when you save a Poetry X bookmark/favourite, and I've always wanted to have a text-based graphic that was edged out of the field of vision a little - so that's why the top, bottom, and right sides are cut off. It keeps the text large and readable, adds a little zest and style, and keeps the headers short.
I also finally fixed the search engine so that it would search the members-only poems and articles too.
Thank you all for the feedback on the articles menus and sub-menus. I've already incorporated two suggestions (I won't say which) so keep 'em coming.
The next big step will be to make the registration, ordering, and coupon codes (for gratis memberships to site authors and distinguished guests) all work and to have people start logging in.
Things are starting to coalesce now, though. I fixed a few minor problems and futzed around with a number of insignificant details today, which are too numerous to remember to write here.
I could use a secretary to follow everything I do and keep track.
Any volunteers?
